8 Tips for Hosting A Summer Outdoor Party

Are you ready to party? We are! Summer is here, and we’re taking advantage of the warm weather to gather outside with family and friends and celebrate the overall lighthearted feeling that the season brings.

So whether you’re doing evening cocktails, an alfresco lunch, an outdoor BBQ, a picnic, a pool party, or a simple garden party, you’ve come to the right place. We’ve curated some tips to help you host your party with ease/in the most stress-free way possible! Let’s begin!

Venue

Once you’ve chosen where you’ll hold your outdoor party — whether on the patio, backyard, lawn, rooftop, or poolside — the best tip we could give is to have the eating area near an access point to your home. Easy access to the house is very helpful, especially if you need a quick kitchen, storage, or bathroom trip.

People having an outdoor party

If you will be grilling, we recommend doing it quite a few meters away from the outdoor seating area due to the heat and fumes.

It’s also important to be mindful of the noise your outdoor party will create, especially if you have outdoor speakers that could potentially disturb your neighbors or if you’ll hold gatherings late into the night.

Since the weather is sometimes unpredictable, having a Plan B that allows your party to work indoors would also be helpful. When the weather decides to (literally) rain on your parade, it never hurts to run through some backup solutions.

TIP: If anyone in your family or circle of friends has mobility issues, keep them in mind as you design your outdoor dining space, so they can easily move around.

Tables and Seating

Now, it’s time to set up! Your guests will need tables and chairs to sit and eat in. The picnic table is a great way to start. Since it can seat many people, you can add one or two depending on the number of your guests. You can also opt for folding tables, an area for the children to eat, or mix in lounge chairs and rockers to encourage guests to mingle and not sit at the party all day.

Outdoor Party Setting

You can create a cozier area if your party guests are just your immediate family. Either way, it’s always best to provide enough space, so people can move comfortably around the dining area.

Lastly, if you don’t have enough to accommodate everyone, you can ask your guests to bring folding outdoor chairs. Think of it as a potluck but for the venue!

Don’t Forget About Lighting

It’s easy to overlook lighting during the summer since the sun sets later in the day. However, insufficient lighting as the night begins to set in can almost instantly end the party. Plan for proper lighting if you feel your festivities will extend beyond daylight time.

You can use string lights, lanterns, and candles to set the mood. These lights can create a calm and warm glow that can help transition the mood to an evening state of mind.

Curate a Playlist

They say no party is complete without tunes, and we couldn’t agree more! Having some music playing when your guests arrive makes for a great ice breaker and can fill the awkward silence in a room before the party crowds up. Plus, it can elevate your ambiance and get everyone to be in a cheerful mood. All you need is portable speakers, and you’re good to go!

TIP: Of course, the songs you pick are entirely up to you. For example, if you want your guests to feel like they are on the beach, you can play some EDM or House music. You can play jazz if you’re opting for a sophisticated city hotel bar energy. If you want a moody, soulful vibe, play some R&B.If you’re unsure, you can ask a musically inclined friend to curate one for you or let Spotify, YouTube, or Google do the work for you.

Keep the bugs at bay

Critters should always be accounted for as they can pretty much ruin any good time outdoors. You can prep your space with a natural bug spray, add stylish citronella candles or plants, or have an area where your guests can apply “courtesy” bug repellent.

Moving water features like mini fountains or humidifiers also can keep the insects at bay while freshening the air. You can also set up mosquito netting-like curtains if your space allows it.

The most important part: Food!

It isn’t a get-together without some food, after all!

Small Bites

Appetizers and nibbles of all kinds are always welcome at any party. A cheese or charcuterie board is always an excellent option when hosting a large group. Add various cheeses (hard, soft, strong, and mild), meats, crackers, nuts, olives, grapes, and summer garnishes.

You can also consider serving summer rolls, skewers, mini sandwiches, chips and salsa, or other seasonal or on-theme treats guests can easily enjoy while walking around and mingling. This way, guests can comfortably serve themselves and return for seconds if they wish!

Summer Refreshments

Our advice, avoid an overly complicated drink menu but offer a good mix of beverages. A dispenser full of cold water infused with fresh fruit, pitchers of lemonade, or sodas and juices in a cooler is an excellent place to start.

If you wish to spike your drinks with alcohol, whip up a sangria with seasonal fruit, a large pitcher of margaritas to pass around, or your signature cocktail to make your gathering feel more special.

Light beer or summer ales are also great to have on hand for beer drinkers at your party. Keep things simple for your guests by choosing only one or two beer options.

You can also keep a few bottles of wine on hand. Rosé and prosecco are great crowd pleasers and offer a beautiful middle ground for wine enthusiasts. Generally, it’s always better to overestimate how many drinks you’ll need than run out mid-party.

An easy-to-use drink dispenser for drinks that guests can use to serve themselves. This will save you time and effort since you’ll only be responsible for refills if it runs low.

Beers on ice

Ice, Ice, Baby!

No one can say no to a cold drink on a hot summer day. So stock up on ice to keep your beverages chilled!

There’s always room for Side Dishes and Desserts!

Side dishes typically include the classic mac and cheese, baked beans, coleslaw, salads, fried finger foods, and some kid-friendly options like fries, chips, hotdogs, and sliders.

For desserts, you can choose cupcakes, brownies, and seasonal fruits like watermelon, pineapple, strawberries, and oranges. You can also set up an ice cream sundae bar with tasty toppings and add other options like popsicles or smoothie bowls!

Yummy Mains

Set up a do-it-yourself food station, aka “a buffet.” It frees up dining space and is ideal for pleasing picky palates.

Add barbecues, steaks, hotdogs, burgers, tacos, sliders, and your family crowd-pleasers to your menu. You can also set up a salad, sandwich, or pasta bar station so your guests can serve themselves without a lot of prep on your end.

At the same time, don’t forget to account for various dietary restrictions. And, always purchase more food than you anticipate will be necessary!

TIP: Not much of a chef? Consider a summer menu around no-cook foods! Salads, sandwiches, and charcuterie plates won’t require you to turn on your stove but will impress your guests. If you’re pinched in time, consider ordering ahead from a restaurant you love!

Opt for Biodegradable, Recyclable, or Compostable Tableware

Compostable and Disposable Utensils

Trust us. You do not want to be stuck washing dishes after hosting the party! The solution? Disposable, compostable, biodegradable, or recyclable plates, utensils, and cups! You can find them practically anywhere now. It’s easier for clean-up, making them great for your party and the planet.

It’s all about the thoughtful and little details

You don’t need to go overboard on decorations, but remember that your guests will absolutely appreciate and notice it when you go above and beyond.

Flowers in vases on a table

Nothing says summer like a colorful bouquet, whether you’re entertaining indoors or out. Display a vase of fresh sunflowers, tulips, daisies, or your favorite blooms to your outdoor dining space or buffet table.

Almost all your guests will need to use the bathroom at some point, and subtle touches like a summer scented candle, a fresh bottle or bar of soap, and extra rolls of toilet paper in a basket can instantly elevate any mood.

Guests will also need to drop bags and other belongings. If your space allows for it, clear off your closet or a spare room to encourage guests to leave their belongings there.

8 Home Improvement Projects You Can Do This Summer

Ah, summer! The season of BBQs, vacations, beach trips, pool parties, and lots of fun in the sun. But for most homeowners, the beautiful weather is also the perfect time for an overhaul like updating your home’s exterior — or really, any work that requires a well-ventilated workspace.

Home improvements can range from minor repairs to major remodeling projects. While some home repair needs and electrical projects may require the help of a professional, there are many home improvements that you and your family can manage alone this season. You’ll have no shortage of projects on your to-do list that are easy to tackle and increase your home’s value at the same time.

So, if you’ve been thinking about doing some home improvement projects this summer, don’t delay! They say we reap what we sow and we can most definitely agree that once you’ve finished everything, you’ll enjoy the benefits all year long — and maybe even host a relaxing cookout with your loved ones!

Here are eight home improvement projects to add to your list this summer. Let’s begin!

Step Up Your Lawn Game

Yard work is probably already on your to-do list this summer, but did you know lawns are one of the most overlooked areas during summer?

To start, you can consider aerating and overseeding your lawn to prevent and alleviate soil compaction, fill in bare patches, and make it green, lush, and free of weeds. Summer months are also an ideal time to trim your trees or bushes and install a new sprinkler system to keep your lawn looking healthy for months to come. Depending on your climate, these tasks are usually done best during early or late summer.

Refresh The Patio

Like everything else, your patio needs TLC, too! Concrete stains, dirt, and mildew can make your home less than enticing. You can start with a power wash to freshen up your yard’s decks and fences. If your exterior paint is peeling or staining, summer is also a good time for a paint job as the warm weather and longer days can speed up the drying process.

Patios are the go-to’s for gatherings during the warmer weather, and if you’re hosting one soon, you can consider adding more furniture for lounging and decorations like string lights or hanging tree lamps!

TIP: If you’re building a patio from scratch, precast concrete pavers are easier and less expensive than pouring a concrete slab patio and faster than laying down smaller individual bricks. Plus, they can feel like a more organic addition to an outdoor space than some other patio options!

Your Front Door Might Need Replacing, Too!

Replacing the front door is a substantial project worth the effort. It can boost your inside comfort, overall home value, and curb appeal. So, if you’ve been putting off the replacement of your home’s exterior front door, now’s the best time to do it.

Door replacement is a home project that entails keeping the front door open to the elements for at least a day or two and having reliably good weather can make the process much simpler and faster. Plus, this can prepare you for the cooler fall and winter weather, especially if your home is drafty!

Make Your Kitchen More Functional!

It’s a given that a complete kitchen remodel comes with a hefty price tag. However, expensive kitchen renovations are not necessary most of the time.

This actually goes hand in hand with your kitchen’s functionality. Repairing something as soon as you spot them can save you the burden of extensive planning and expenses in the future. If you have outdated appliances, dented countertops, leaking fixtures, or worn-out cabinets, this is your sign to upgrade or fix them!

For example, outdated appliances use more energy than new ones. It’s also worth replacing fixtures that leak wastewater. You may not feel the burden of the monthly expenses on your utilities, but these will definitely add up in overtime.

EDG 2

Countertops are also worth looking at. If your countertops are dented or dulled, you may want to have this looked at (and repaired if possible) as it can cause accidents. On the other hand, countertops with worn-out sealing should be resealed if you want to preserve and lengthen their working life.

Most kitchen renovations will set you back from two weeks to several months, especially if it involves painting, countertop upgrades, or installing new appliances. And guess what — summer calls for it! The temperature is perfect for keeping spaces open, and you’ll thank yourself later for doing this now than later.

Improve Your Home’s Efficiency

Summer is prime time for cranking up the AC. If you haven’t used your air conditioning system for a while, it’s best to have it serviced to ensure your unit runs efficiently. Also, replace or fix drafty windows and consider installing double-pane windows to reduce energy loss and outside noise. This can deflect the sun’s rays and regulate the temperature in closed spaces.

Another home efficiency tip is to update light fixtures and bulbs and choose energy-saving LED or solar-driven options. You can also consider implementing some daylighting techniques like letting the summer sun illuminate your home to reduce your use of electrical lighting.

TIP: Replace your AC filter every 45-90 days and use a fan to help circulate airflow inside the home. Planting trees and installing overhangs can also help lighten the load on your AC.

Pool Maintenance is Important, Too!

If your pool is a hit during summer, stay on top of it by doing the cleaning daily. Start by skimming the surface for leaves and debris, emptying the baskets, and vacuuming the bottom of your pool. Also, clean your filter and check the chemicals and water quality to avoid costly repairs during the summer.

Insulate your Basement and Crawl Space

Summer is almost synonymous with heat but also dryness in many areas of your home. If your basement or crawlspace has moisture build-up problems, you should look at this during summer. During the heavy rainy and colder months, it will be much harder to determine the cause of this issue.

Properly installed crawl space insulation helps control mold and mildew, keeps upper floors warm, and maintains the health of your home’s foundation. Summer is the best time for this extensive project, as it gives you enough time and cooperative weather to make those frequent crawls under the house.

7

Plan Ahead for Summer Storms

Summer storms are a thing. Prevent flooding, water damage, mold, and standing water by cleaning your home’s gutters. The warmer months are the best time for a roofing project since new shingles require heat to form a weathertight seal.

In addition, you can prevent possible damage to the roof of your home and neighboring structures by trimming any surrounding vegetation.

Also, consider hiring a professional to service your home’s generator and sump pump to ensure they are operating properly.

E&D was fantastic from the moment we walked in. Their team was extremely helpful. We gave them a budget, and they had no problem staying within that range, which was great. They didn’t try to upsell and really listened to what we wanted and what we were going for in our new kitchen. They also did the plumbing work, so we didn’t need to shop around for that, which made life easier. All their teams were professional and so nice!

As far as renovations go, E&D made it as easy and simple as possible!

I highly recommend E&D Granite City. This is my second time using their product and service, but it’s my first time dealing with them directly.

The clerical staff — Rosa — did an outstanding job of coordinating the project, from measuring to product selection to onsite installation. The installer –Orlando — did a fantastic job of making sure everything was perfect.

I received a top-quality job and it was done within their quoted timeframe. Price is also reasonable compared to other companies that I reached out to.

Overall, I’m very satisfied with E&D Granite City!

5 Reasons Why You Should Renovate Your Kitchen This Spring

Spring is here — the season of growth, change, and new beginnings! And if you’re still sitting on the fence on whether you should do your renovations this season, we’re urging you to put those rejuvenated energies to work – ’tis the season to start something new!

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to take on full-blown renovation projects to refresh your home. Instead, simple swaps of hardware, a change of paint, adding newfound styles or ornaments to any room, and rearranging furniture can spruce up a home in dire need of change! The possibilities are really endless!

If you have a little bit of time on your hands, the best place to start is the kitchen. Most homeowners start their renovations at the heart of the home as this is where the magic happens! If you’re planning to host brunches or dinners in the near future, you won’t regret starting your renovation in the kitchen since this is the common area where everyone gathers. Plus, if you’re thinking of sprucing up because you’re putting your home in the market, you’re on the right path as kitchens are one of the most viewed rooms in online searches!

Reasons Why You Should Do Your Kitchen Upgrades

Here are some compelling reasons why you should do your kitchen upgrades (or really, any projects you’ve been putting off for a while now) this spring!

1. Add a “touch of you” to the kitchen.

When you step into your kitchen, does it feel like you? A fresh coat of paint, change of cabinet handles, or a new set of lights can almost instantly do the trick! If your countertops have been installed for a while now, you might want to look into that too. You’ll be surprised at how much a countertop upgrade can change the look of your kitchen and make it truly yours.

2. Make your kitchen more functional.

If you’re wondering where to start, ask yourself: When you’re using the kitchen, do you feel that something is missing?

There are numerous ways to reconfigure your kitchen and make it more functional, and it ultimately depends on your preferences. If you have too much stuff or little space for everything, start maximizing the functionality of your kitchen by getting rid of equipment or dinnerware sets you have not used for a while or no longer need. If the space is still not enough, add more organizers or cabinets.

You can also add a pantry (if you haven’t yet) to keep your non-perishable food items separate from your dinnerware, kitchen equipment, and so on. You can also add or change your lighting, change sinks, or fixtures – any change that will best suit your needs.

3. Save money and time in the future.

For example, outdated appliances use more energy than new ones and fixtures that leak wastewater. You may not feel the burden of the monthly expenses on your utilities, but these will definitely add up in overtime.

Countertops are also worth looking at. If your countertops are dented or dulled, you may want to have this looked at (and repaired if possible) as it can cause accidents. On the other hand, countertops with worn-out sealing should be resealed if you want to preserve and lengthen their working life.

4. The weather calls for it!

Most kitchen renovations will set you back from two weeks to two months, especially if it involves painting, countertop upgrades, or installing new appliances. And guess what — spring weather calls for it! The temperature is not too cold or too hot, and you’ll thank yourself later for doing this now than later.

Home renovations done in spring can also let you enjoy summer seamlessly and with a reinvigorated aura! If you’re planning on hosting gatherings, you’ll have more time to entertain your guests than having to worry if your appliances or fixtures break down during your party.

If you’re looking to sell, spring also puts the odds in your favor. Summer is notoriously famous as the best time for home selling or buying. Based on our research, spring sparks the home selling activity, but sales really go up during the summer months. Most sources attribute it to longer days, great weather, and people generally having more spare time during these seasons.

5. Increase the value of your home.

Even if you’re not looking to sell, upgrading a kitchen is one of the trusted ways to increase the value of your home. A newly improved kitchen can bring you improved happiness — knowing that you will be making and sharing meals with a trusted kitchen you genuinely love and deserve.

Updated kitchen appliances, sturdy countertops, functional fixtures, and aesthetically pleasing backdrops are also key for homeowners looking to sell. However, countertops hold the most weight. Granite, quartz, and marble countertops can drastically increase your home’s value due to these natural stones’ designs, quality, and craftsmanship. Some homebuyers will even start at the kitchen and check the countertop material. If they don’t like it, they might immediately dismiss everything, even if the house is worth looking at.
